CHAPTER 24

EZEKIEL 15-48

APOSTASY AND RESTORATION OF ISRAEL

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your fiesh and give you a heart of fiesh. I will put my Spirit within you. Ezk. 36:26-27

Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel all prophesied at the time of the collapse of Judah, the second and final of the two small city-state princedoms, of the end of the kingdom of David and Solomon. We are reminded that Jeremiah had received his call and had begun preaching in Jerusalem in 627 B.C. Four years later, in 623, Ezekiel had been born near Jerusalem. Three years later, in 620, Daniel had been born. In 605, when Nebuchadnezzar defeated the Assyrian armies and then first invaded Judah and Jerusalem, Ezekiel was studying for the priesthood. At that time Daniel, a fifteen-year old lad without blemish was carried away in the first wave of exiles to Babylon. In 598 when Ezekiel was force-marched to Babylon to remain among the exiles, Daniel was already working in Nebuchadnezzar’s palace, and had been for seven years. Ezekiel and Daniel most certainly knew one another and Jeremiah well.

This was a time of changing of empires, of world war. Ezekiel spoke during the very active time of the consolidation of the empire of Babylonia under Nebuchadnezzar, and as the Persian empire began to grow. Daniel would speak as the Persian empire, with its religion of Zoroaster, conquered Babylon. About 100 years later, the Persian empire would begin its fall to the rising Greek empire, with its religious concepts and thoughts. All of this worldly history is the stage for these men.

Jeremiah and Ezekiel are the prophets of the new covenant, of God’s word and commandments being written on the hearts of humans, and not upon stone as in the past. Here was the colossal seed change of the relationship of God to his people. It was about 585 years before the birth of Jesus the Christ, who for many who call themselves Christians is the Messiah, and the actuality of that new covenant. The stage is here being set. That is the single, solitary big event in the history of mankind.

It is of the utmost importance for a person to impress upon his or her mind, and heart, that the time of Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel was not just a time of tremendous changing world empires. Of greater importance, it was a time of changing theology by the unchanging God. The first temple, that built by Solomon, of which we see many drawings, is forever changed. In about fifty years Cyrus of Persia will free the exiles to return home. Not all will return, and those who do will reluctantly rebuild the walls and a very small temple of Jerusalem. There will never again be a descendant of David to sit on any earthly throne. For about 650 years, until shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus, there would be descendants of Levi
