Carex montana is a plant of continuity, one that creates repetition and harmony in a garden.

Carex montana (mountain sedge)

FLOWER Yellow to brown with maturity, ¾- to 1½-inch spikes, clustered at the top of the flowering stems, covering a good portion of the plant.

FOLIAGE Rich, bright green, z to ⅛ inch wide, fine and firm, linear, upright to arching, forming stocky clumps.

HEIGHT 15 to 22 inches in late spring and in bloom.

SPREAD 10 to 12 inches in two years, 14 to 18 inches in five years.

BLOOM TIME Early April into late May.

GROWING CONDITIONS Moist, average, well-drained to slightly dry soil in full sun to part shade.

FIRST DATE Carex montana 70% / Carex flacca 30%

You have only to look at the growing conditions to see this native European sedge is a durable plant that lives in diverse habitats. That amenable cultural characteristic makes Carex montana one of the many plants necessary in all designed gardens, a plant of continuity. Prune back just above the new growth in March; leave the debris in the garden around all the plants. Seed ripens and falls in July, but I have not seen any reseeding in my gardens in the four years I have had it. Lives well on average rainfall. As the plant ages, it loosens up in the center as the rhizomes spread outward; when it creates this loose ground layer, other plants can fill in the spaces as they appear. You can choose which plants to add or manage the ones that have moved in on their own. There will always be something to do! It’s like breathing you will do it all your life—you just don’t want to worry about it.
