CHAPTER 6

THEO

Normally I was comfortable in social gatherings. That was not the case last night. I thought taking Kaira was a simple resolution to my problem. Great sex with a sexy, gorgeous woman, what could go wrong? I thought the truce was enough. But things with us were a hell of a lot more complicated than I thought.

Unlike our first night on the boat together, there was no snuggling. I tried, but she wasn’t going for it. Granted, I was also pissed, but fuck, that didn’t mean I was opposed to having sex. Well, I’m a guy. I could be hooked up to life support and I would still want sex.

Kaira had fucked me and didn’t even like me. Actually, I’d have thought she despised me. Now she pays me a compliment that she enjoyed her day with me, and suddenly, I’m cut off. I don’t think I’ll ever understand women. Maybe it was all those damn romance books they read, or worse, wrote. They lived in some delusion that men were...I didn’t even know what they thought we were, but we were not that.

We couldn’t go up to the deck with the tension hanging between us like this. Jack and Sandy might not have noticed last night, but it was still morning none of us had started drinking yet.

“Kaira, can we talk?” I asked, knocking on the bathroom door. There was only so long a person could soak in a tub, right?

“I can hear you. What do you want to say?” she asked.

How about get the fuck out of the bathroom and talk to me.

Kaira had to know she was pushing my buttons. First the silent treatment, then refusing to eat breakfast that I ordered for us this morning. Now she wasn’t willing to face me. If I didn’t fix this now, I could kiss any move deal with Jack goodbye.

Fine. I’ll play your game.

“Kaira, I’m sorry.”

There was no response. I wasn’t sure what else I was supposed to say besides sorry. Hell, I wasn’t even sure what I was apologizing for. I was pissed at her. She monopolized the entire brunch and then later that night, all I could hear were a bunch of women cackling over God knows what.

I needed to keep trying.

“I...I know yesterday didn’t go very well. But today is a new day. It will be better, I promise,” I said, trying to sound hopeful. Still nothing. “Please, Kaira, speak to me,” I pleaded.

Never had I begged a woman to talk to me before. This was ridiculous, but I had a lot on the line on this trip.

Hurting Kaira’s feelings wasn’t on my list of concerns when I started this. Huge mistake on my part. She didn’t need to agree to do this for me. I owed her, and I wasn’t acting very appreciative.

Placing my forehead against the door, I closed my eyes. Please, honey. Let me make it up to you.

The doorknob turned and I stepped back so she could open it. Couldn’t believe how my heart was racing.
