UFO RELIGIONS

It is wise to distinguish between UFO sightings and UFO-based religions. Most reliable people who claim a UFO sighting never join a UFO-based religion. In contrast, some people create UFO religious beliefs without ever seeing a UFO; still others join these groups out of dire spiritual need or curiosity.27 During the last few decades, several small religions have developed that center on UFOs and contact with their occupants.28 A large number of these dropped by the wayside without notice, but others, such as Heaven’s Gate, stayed in the news until they called an end to their drama with mass suicide.

Not all UFO cults can be judged under the microscope of Heaven’s Gate, but similarities, such as the channeling of information from UFO contacts, deserve attention. This is especially true when occult methods have been used to gain this information. Long before the mid-twentieth-century UFO excitement, believers claimed contact with intergalactic beings they thought existed on Venus or Mars. The following occult-based religions were founded on this supposed contact with extraterrestrial beings.29

Swedenborgianism

Emanuel Swedenborg founded the first formal religion, Swedenborgianism, based largely upon space travel and contact with extraterrestrial beings. Swedenborg’s first work, Earths in the Solar World (1758), relied on this hypothesis. In it, Swedenborg claimed to leave his body through astral projection and travel to other planets, where he gained spiritual insight from spirit-beings on Mars, Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter.30 The astral travel that Swedenborg used for his revelatory knowledge is an occultic practice—a tool of the occult used to contact multidimensional beings.
