Now the same cycle will repeat, with the sun’s setting point moving rapidly south from its due west setting point of the equinox. At first the sun moves very quickly, but as the days grow shorter the setting point will slow down in its movement south until at the winter solstice, around 21 December. Then it will again stop, reverse and start to move north again back towards its equinox position. You can imagine it rather like the swinging of a giant pendulum along the horizon, moving quickly at the bottom of its swing (the equinoxes), and slowing to a stop, then reversing at the extremes of its swing (the solstices).
