A Use flowers (here nasturtium/Tropaeolum majus) for companion planting, to provide insects with nectar. Plants of many different flower shapes will encourage a variety of beneficial insects.

B Allow asparagus to produce berries to give birds a food source in autumn; also leave the heads on globe artichokes.

C Make up some comfrey feed and set up barrier controls and natural methods of pest control where possible, in order to avoid introducing chemicals into the vegetable plot.

D Avoid using slug pellets as these are proven to kill birds; instead try barrier methods such as paper pellets to protect plants.
