Figure 16-5 shows the last phrase of Cole Porter’s “All Of You,” voiced with two inverted So What chords, two upper structures, and a fourth chord. Note the reharmonization.

Figure 16-6 shows something you might play on a II-V progression. The So What voicing for the D-7 chord is inverted—the root (D) is on top instead of on the bottom, resulting in a Gsus chord. It resolves to a G7b9 upper structure #IV minor voicing. The upper structure voicing then goes up and down a minor third. G7b9 is a diminished scale chord and—remember—you can always move around in minor thirds in diminished scale harmony. In this example, the G7b9 chord symbol on the third beat is anticipated by a beat and a half, the chord being played on the “and of one.” You can play with the time like this pretty freely when soloing, but be careful of anticipating chords by more than a half-beat when ‘comping, or what you play might clash with the soloist. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it, but use caution.
