Whenever my phone rang and I saw Taek’s name appear on the screen, I felt like I was starring in the romance of the century. If I happened to be alone in my room, I’d put my chin up high and flip my hair back before picking up. Embarrassing, I know. Doa would find the sight utterly mortifying if he walked in on me, only his opinion didn’t matter, because I was keeping these calls a little secret from the rest of my family. To them, Taek was still T, the boy band star I’d been crushing on since high school. Mom still assumed he’d dropped by my waiting room to say thanks, which was what many other guests had also done out of courtesy.
Admittedly, Taek wasn’t my boyfriend, but that didn’t mean I didn’t love him like one. When I talked to him, everything felt so right. I’d never experienced that with any other guys. During my freshman year of college, I’d gone through a short phase of going on a first date every weekend. Harim had encouraged me to, and she’d helped out by setting me up on blind dates with numerous classmates and coworkers of her then-boyfriend. Without a doubt, her goal was for us to go on double dates together. However, her plan didn’t work out. She broke up with her then-boyfriend two months into the relationship, and I never so much as went on a second date.
Why didn’t I go on any second dates? For your information, I didn’t turn anyone down for superficial reasons. Except for the guy with an uncanny resemblance to the first kid who taunted me for being a “Dumb Cheeseburger” back in elementary school. And the guy who reeked of onions; I nearly threw up mid-conversation at the café. Ugh. Anyway, my point is, talking to any random guy Harim had set me up with felt like a total chore. No. It felt a hundred times worse than any chore I’d ever done around the house.
The conversation would go like this. My date would ask me about my hobbies, and I’d tell him I enjoyed listening to music while I cooked or fixed myself a latte. When he proceeded to ask me about what kind of music I liked, I’d mention Shadows. Not in a crazed fangirl way; all I’d bring up was Shadows and the name of their latest hit. However, my date would then, without fail, poke fun at me or utter a disparaging remark. Stuff like, “I need to introduce you to real music.” “Don’t they wear makeup?” “So you’re into looks, not talent?” Oh, and the most annoying part was that none of my dates had a problem with girl groups.
On my way home after my last midterm exam, I received a call from Taek. Not through JoaJoa Messenger, which was what he used to contact me while he was in Europe, but a call directly from his phone number. A smile came onto my face.
