Chapter

The next challenge took place the following day. Chase brought us to the island where Amanda and I had eaten the reward breakfast. In high tide, the tiny island became two, with a mile-wide channel of water in between them. We jumped from the boat to the white sand beach on the western island.
Lined up in a row on the sand were five colored mats. In the middle of the channel of water, far from us, were five colored poles to match. I squinted to get a better view and thought I saw something shining in the sunlight on top of the poles.
Chase directed each of us to a mat. I chose the red one again.
For a moment I felt like I was at a summer camp, about to begin an interesting scavenger hunt. But the illusion was broken by the camera crew, complete with fuzzy microphones and huge headphones, who set up their equipment all over the beach.
“Today’s challenge is a race,” Chase began. “Beginning on the beach here, you will swim out to the poles in the water. Once you’re at your pole, dive down to untie a key from the bottom. Then, climb the pole to the top and use your key to unlock the treasure chest there. Swim back to shore carrying the item from the chest to the mats here on the beach. The first person to return to the start with their item wins the challenge.”
This sounded like an intense test of physical ability. Normally, I could climb that pole, I thought. But can I do it after swimming for half a mile on a mostly empty stomach?
“The reward for this challenge is immunity,” Chase continued. “That means that during the first voting session tonight, no one can vote for the winner. Sound good to everyone?”
We all nodded.
“On my count—!” Chase raised his hands into the air. “Are you ready? Three! Two! One! Go!”
I launched off my mat and sprinted to the blue-green water. I took a couple steps into the waves and dove in. I swam with everything I had. My muscles began to ache quickly. But the food I had eaten yesterday powered me out farther and farther from the shore. I tasted salt as water splashed across my face.
I got to the red pole faster than I expected, and suddenly it was in front of me. I stopped swimming and bobbed up and down for a moment, shaking the water from my face. Next to me, I saw bubbles at the orange pole, meaning Richie was already here. He was underwater, looking for his key.
I have to beat Richie. It was the only way to prevent his alliance from voting me off tonight.
I dove down, keeping my eyes open. The salt stung and made everything blurry. Thankfully, the water was only about ten feet deep. The key was attached to a cord wrapped around the base of the pole. I grabbed it and started working on the knot to free it.
When my lungs started burning even more than my eyes, I shot back up to the surface and caught my breath.
