Chapter Twenty-Five

On Tuesday morning the end of the Choctaw Nation siege was being covered nationally. All the morning shows used the siege as their lead story. The talking heads on CNN, Fox, Keith Holderman, Rachel Madden and others were discussing the event. Like most of their programming, they were talking to people who were not relevant. All everyone was doing was guessing about what happen in Durant. Of course some of the older news types made the Pine Ridge connection and were guessing what kind of impact this might have on Indian relations. There were dozens of theories of why the Choctaw Nation siege took place. Topics brought into the discussion where Indian casinos, federal money given to the Indians, Indian Health Care, alcohol and drug rehab centers, Indian Chiefs, Indian Senators and many others. All these smart, intelligent people and they didn't have a clue about what caused the siege.

The President gave a short statement that he was pleased the siege ended without any loss of life. He was giving Senator James Cody much of the credit because he was on the scene. He also gave credit to local law enforcement agencies such as the Choctaw Tribal police, the Durant Police Dept and the area FBI agents who assisted. He mentioned that he had spoken to Chief Wilson and gave the Chief his assurance that the three Indians leaders would be charged and tried in federal courts. He stated the need to send a strong message that any attacks on this nation and the Sovereign Indian nations within our boundaries would not be tolerated. There was no reference to the three Indians on the inside that facilitated the end of the siege. The world was watching while everything unfolded last night. It was obvious to those that witnessed the surrender that we played an important part and now the three of us were being hunted. All during the early morning Levi and I had been contacted a dozen times to give some kind of statement. All wanted the behind the scene story.

I arrived at CMA headquarters around 9 a.m. I knew there was much to be done and important decisions to be made. There's a small crowd of news reporters camped out by the front door and across the street. I pushed my way through and keep repeating "no comment". Roman, Tammy and Levi were already in their offices receiving and making calls. As soon as everyone sees me, they stop what they are doing and make their way into my office.

Tammy was the first one to speak. "John, the staff is not getting anything done because all they're doing is taking calls. Senator Jim's office called a couple of times, too. Chief Wilson's secretary called and wants you to meet with the Chief at his office."

"I'm sure he does," said Levi.

"FBI Agent Rivers' office called and wants to debrief both of you. Thunder Hawk called from where he and the two others are being held and wants to speak to you as soon as possible.
