Chapter 6

African Churches and the

Sanctification of Crimes

In this chapter, we will attempt to identify the peasant folks in Africa as a chessboard pawn played by different groups to advance selfish interests. We will treat our central theme from one other perspective. It has so far, not been difficult to identify the uneducated or poorly educated folks as the central constituency of traditional institutions. A constituency that is systematically nurtured to believe strongly in the supernatural superiority of traditional institutional monarchies to keep the monarchs ever important and relevant to public life! It never seems to matter what price the folks pay in collective retarded political and intellectual growth. In this chapter, we will see the black African folks as a pawn in the hands of celestial and self-ordained cardinals, bishops and prophets of doom and destruction representing the kingdom of God on earth!

Nowhere in the world is the saying that “Religion is the opium of the masses” more true of Christianity than in Africa. Fanatic Christianity in Africa is only paralleled by fanatic Mohammedanism in the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia even though devoid of the jihadist element prevalent in Islam. Indeed, fanatical attachment to the Christian religion and the teachings of Jesus Christ is not confined to Africa alone. Christianity for committed Christians all over the world, most prominently in the American continent, is about the belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ as the sole means of human salvation. The truly committed Christian can hardly be swayed by any argument that seeks to divert from blind faith in biblical teachings. The need to take a critical and scientific view in evaluating the religion as Professor Stephen Hawking would do is not an issue for the committed believer. Rightly so too! After all, it is within the democratic and constitutional confines of individual rights to believe whatever he/she chooses. But there is nowhere else in the whole “wild” world where churches and church leaders hardly have any other function but to fill a socio-psychological gap in a world dominated by the pervasive fear of imaginary supernatural powers but Africa. Nowhere else in the world do church leaders have the status of substitutes for witch doctors and spiritual healers than in Africa.

For the purpose of setting the records straight though, there are also true and authentic Christian Believers in the project of Jesus in Africa much like their counterparts in different parts of the world. Believers who take the teachings of the Bible as fully as they are served! Faithful followers who hold on firmly to the belief that Jesus Christ came to this world, having been born in miraculous circumstances without carnal biological processes! Faithful followers who are unshaken in their common belief that Jesus did not only rise from death proceeding straight up to the realms of God in heaven above the cloud but also died for the sins of man!

These are believers for whom the worldly views of a neutral observer would mean nothing.
