Miracle-Minded Management

It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.

—Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’m a bit surprised when I first arrive at Jordan and Nicole’s condominium in downtown Boston, near the Commons. He and Nicole invited Judy and me to attend an ACIM gathering at their home, a place we’ve never been. Despite knowing this man for several years now, I didn’t know what to expect. On the one hand, they can probably afford anything they want. On the other hand, they don’t appear to want much. Their condo is relatively small, contemporary, and very Zen-like. It’s surrounded by beautiful gardens, small fountains, and extraordinary art. I immediately feel calm and welcome. Inside the condo are Italian tile floors, modern furniture, tropical plants, salt rocks, scented candles, and warm lighting. Again, I feel an instant sense of equanimity and peace. Evidently, Judy feels the same way. I observe her taking it all in with a warm smile on her face.

“What’s that scent?” Judy asks Nicole as we enter the living room, which is quietly buzzing with the conversation of about half a dozen other guests sitting in a circle. “It smells amazing.”

“Oh, that’s frankincense,” Nicole replies, pointing out an essential oil diffusor on the piano. “It’s a very healthy oil.”

“No wonder the Magi brought it to Jesus as a gift.” I smile.

“Yes, I think the Magi knew what they were doing. Frankincense and myrrh have been used for thousands of years as healing agents.”

“And some believe the gold to be turmeric, because of its color, and it has healing properties,” Jordan adds, walking into the room. “After all, what would Jesus need with actual gold?”

Judy and I look at each other. She winks, amused. “Makes sense to me,” she says. “I just never thought of it that way.”

“Let me introduce you to our other guests,” Jordan continues. “This is Adam, Sheila, Tony, Erica, and Lilly. We’ve been meeting together to discuss ACIM for about two years now, and we all find it quite enlightening. Friends, this is Jack and Judy.”

We greet the other guests and then join the circle. Jordan proceeds to serve sparkling water, champagne, or wine to most of the attendees, including Nicole and himself. He grabs a Samuel Adams from the fridge for me. An assortment of cheeses, crackers, nuts, and vegetables are on the coffee table in front of us.

Jordan takes his place on an Eames chair in the circle and nods to Nicole. She then opens the meeting, simply and eloquently. “Greetings, everyone. How about we begin tonight by sharing a short personal story relating to ACIM? I trust Jack and Judy will find this helpful and may even have a story of their own to share.”

My mind immediately races to my experience with Joe. Then Kathleen comes to mind. Suddenly, I stop. Someone is talking, and I’m not listening. Be present, Jack. Be present.

“At the time, I was going through a very painful divorce,” Adam is saying.
