1b) “When will this leave?”

If the appearance of thoughts often goes unnoticed, so too does their departure. We wrestle with thought after thought without recognizing the moments at which we have changed partners.

“What’s the big deal?” you might think. “I happen to enjoy floating down my stream of consciousness.” Sometimes it is fun—until you find yourself chained to an inner tube in a mental squall.

If you’re anything like me, even though you know that thoughts come and go, you tend to relate to them as if they have always been and will always be. But they haven’t, and they won’t. Attempting to pay close attention to the point at which a given thought terminates may help you shake the illusion that subsequent thoughts will last forever.
