The Film Director’s Breakfast

Nick, a film director, was always scouting out exotic locations for the movie company or tied up with the shoot, while his wife, Monica, was home with the children. Nick was a demon worker, and he made the people who worked for him toe the line. Monica felt she was being crushed and that Nick was deaf to her predicament or what she needed from him. The friction between husband and wife had reached incendiary levels. They were in my couples boundary workshop to learn how to use boundaries with one another.

I had asked them the night before to go back to their hotel and write out some things that had happened between the two of them that distressed them but that they had never shared with one another before.

Nick went first. I had seen in his written report that he felt his wife was not feeding the children properly. He thought that she was feeding the children too much junk food, too much chocolate-flavored cereal at breakfast. He was a health-food devotee. He wanted the four-year-old to eat muesli. He was highly distressed about his wife’s behavior.

Nick burst out at Monica obnoxiously, talking without any functional boundaries:
