CHAPTER TWELVE

Atlantic Crossing

Aboard the Maggie Mae - Year Eight

The Chief was so at home on the water that he convinced Andi and her crew to let him take the helm for the first watch. The seas were calm, and the moon was too small for it to give him much light, but he wanted the serene feeling he always got from a few hours of steering through the ink-black water. Andi gave in and said she would take everyone else below and show them to their quarters. Iris gave the Chief a kiss and told him to have fun, and being as astute as she was, she was a bit amused by the glance of regret she saw on Andi’s face.

Everyone followed behind Andi except Jessie, who made himself comfortable in one of the tall chairs on the bridge. He was a little protective of Andi and the Maggie Mae, and he had expected his shift at the helm, so he wasn’t sleepy. He decided he would stay at his post and get to know this big man who seemed so at home that Andi had left her boat in his hands.

The Chief was glad for his company, and although he guessed Jessie had a motive for staying behind, he had a motive of his own. He was curious and wanted to get to know the crew of the Maggie Mae and hear their stories about survival since the beginning of the apocalypse. Jessie was hesitant at first, but the Chief’s likable personality soon had the younger man talking nonstop.

Jessie started at the beginning and how they had met Andi. It sounded familiar to the Chief because he had been in the Charleston harbor when it started. One thing he had thought about from the first day was what it must have been like after the sun went down on the chaos and carnage they had left behind. They had sailed out of the harbor with their own problems on the cruise ship, and to tell the truth, he would have preferred to have been on a tugboat like the Maggie Mae. Still, if he had been at the helm of a tug, he might have done something stupid like try to rescue people, and that hadn’t worked out so well for most rescuers.

In the light of day, it had been a terrifying sight, but at least they could see what was happening around them. As Jessie described it, the darkness only blocked out what they could see, but there was still the sound of it and the smell. He said he didn’t realize it until later when they were out on the open sea where there was only the salt air, but as Boston went up in flames, there was another smell besides the burning buildings, cars, and boats. There was the smell that came from thousands of people dying, whether they were burned or murdered by the hordes of infected. He said he didn’t think he would ever forget that smell.
