Twice Jesus healed paralytics. The extent of the paralysis could be seen in their dependence on others. Jesus visited a pool of Bethesda that many believed had curative powers (John 5:3–4). Jesus asked what appears to be a ridiculous question: “Do you want to get well?” (v. 6 NIV). Most likely Jesus asked the question to get the man’s attention. Jesus told him to stand and walk. The man was immediately healed. The second occurrence was an event we discussed earlier. Four men brought their paralyzed friend to Jesus but couldn’t get close because of the crowds. They tore through the roof and lowered their companion to Jesus. The man walked on his own from the house.

An account in Matthew 8:14–15 reveals a healing done for one of his disciples. Visiting Peter’s home, Jesus and the disciples discovered that Peter’s mother-in-law was ill with a fever. Jesus took her by the hand, and she arose healed and well enough to prepare food.

There are two accounts of deformities made right. The first we touched on in an earlier chapter. A man with a withered hand was healed (Matthew 12:9–13). Whatever the cause, it was noticeable and well known. It must have been amazing to see the arm become whole again. The next deformity involved a woman with a back problem that had plagued her for eighteen years (Luke 13:10–17). For nearly two decades, people had watched the hunched woman, and then, with a single statement by Jesus, she stood erect again.
