† ‘Engram’, meaning the physical trace of a memory, was coined in German in 1904 by the zoologist Richard Semon, and first appeared in English in a 1921 translation of his book The Mneme.

* This finding entered popular culture – in Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (this was the basis of the film Blade Runner), people use a Penfield Mood Organ to induce emotions in themselves and other people.

* In 2016 the journalist Luke Dittrich (Scoville’s grandson) raised a series of ethical questions about the way that HM was treated by scientists, focusing on the role of Suzanne Corkin. These issues related primarily to conflicts of interest, consent issues and ownership of data, including the alleged destruction of data relating to HM by Corkin.
