The Pyramid

The chariot stopped at the bottom of one of the spectacular pyramids and the three of them craned their necks backwards, marvelling at its height, its sharp apex pointing majestically to the heavens.

The soldiers indicated that they should get off the chariot, and they did as they were told. One of the soldiers disappeared into a small opening in the pyramid and they all waited, wondering what was happening. Uncle Vince brought a small compass out of his jacket pocket and checked their direction. Robert asked him what he was doing.

“Just checking the direction.” “What for?”

Uncle Vince shrugged. “You never know.”

The soldier who had gone into the pyramid returned with three burning torches, and they were each handed one. They were then ushered towards a dark and forbidding entrance, where a narrow passage tapered into the tomb-like interior of the pyramid.

Bridget stood firm. “I’m not going in there. No way!” One of the soldiers pointed his gun at her.

Uncle Vince’s shoulders sagged miserably. “We’ve no choice. We’d better do as they say.”

They began shuffling slowly into the gloom, the shadows of their torches flickering across the wall. The little daylight that streamed in behind them began to disappear. When they turned round to look, they saw a solid stone wall sliding closed behind them. As the stone slid into place, the noise it made sounded final.

Bridget almost screamed but her voice was frozen with fear and not a sound came out, other than a frightened gasp. Robert jumped as Leonardo licked his hand.

Uncle Vince’s voice echoed in the labyrinth. “I think we may as well walk on into the pyramid.”

Robert sniffed. “What’s the point?”
