The following day at work Patricia was her usual jovial self, multitasking to the max talking with customers, filling new prescription orders, and giving vaccinations when Shawn came in at eleven.
“Good morning everyone.”
There was a collective good morning from Patricia and her coworkers, spicy Javid, and Afro-centric Meilani.
“Where do you need me?” Shawn asked Patricia, who had a handful of documents.
“Grab some labels from the stockroom and fill the printer please.”
“That’s pretty,” Shawn said, pointing to the pink flower brooch on Patricia’s lab coat. “Is it new?”
“No. I’ve had it for a long time,” Patricia replied. “Twenty-five years.”
“I’ve never seen you wear it before.”
The corners of Patricia’s lips curved upward. “It was a gift from a special friend.”
Shawn disappeared into the back and Patricia went to the consultation window to help a customer who had questions about acid reflux medication. When she returned to her computer, Shawn was loading the printer with blank prescription labels.
“Thanks for letting me work early yesterday.”
“You’re welcome.” Patricia smiled, taking in the pinkish hue that filled Shawn’s cheeks.
Javid came strolling over with four prescription bottles that had been dropped off by Mr. Dunkin for a refill. “Yeah, we had a ball last night,” he boasted while scanning the barcodes into the computer system.
“Where did you guys go?” Patricia inquired, reading the prescription notes on the computer.
“Cesar’s Killer Margaritas to celebrate Shawn’s birthday,” Javid announced. His olive skin flushing with the memories of what must’ve been a fantastic time.
“How nice,” Patricia grinned. “When was your birthday?”
“Yesterday.”
Patricia slid a glance to Shawn. “Happy belated birthday. Why didn’t you say anything?” she asked, gliding and clicking the mouse. “Y’all didn’t want this old chick to tag along?”
“It wasn’t anything like that–––”
Patricia cut Shawn off. “I’m just teasing.”
“Shawn said she didn’t want to do much, but I told her no way, you only turn twenty-five once.” Javid snapped his fingers. “So I called her other BFF Candace, and we put the plan into motion.”
“Javid, you’re so over the top.” Shawn rolled her eyes and snickered as she closed the lid to the printer and hit the reset key.
“Anyway, you had a blast.” Javid countered.
“I sure did,” Shawn smirked at him and winked her eye. “Twenty-five never felt so good.”
Twenty-five. Born on December twenty-ninth.
A sharp pain hit right above Patricia’s navel; then it ruptured throughout her abdomen. She placed her hand protectively over her midsection and stared at Shawn. Really stared at Shawn. She took in the ivory complexion, dark hair and its silky texture, and these granny-smith apple green eyes. A stark resemblance and clarity made her heart race and pound against her chest. Perspiration dotted around Patricia’s hairline. “Happy twenty-fifth birthday.”
Her world faded to black.
