Miles away, a woman with bandages on her face stepped out of a small roadside motel room, phone in hand. She made a call, glancing back at the room. A man with a trustworthy blond mustache sat watching television. The mustache and other alterations made him look younger than the woman; that would change when she recovered from her surgery.

She lifted the phone to her ear, walking to the far side of the parking lot, and spoke in a warm, reassuring voice. “It’s Darlene, Charlie’s wife. Just letting you know everything’s fine here at the farm. No need to worry about a thing!”

She rang another number and spoke in a very different tone of voice. “About that herd of ponies—let’s give it a week or two more. I understand zoos pay more when the meat is extra-lean for the tigers—”

“Darlene?” the man called from inside.

“I’ll be in touch,” the woman said calmly. She turned the phone off and walked back inside.
