The description in equation 10.1 follows the classical “cognitive architecture” approach to human cognition, which seeks to understand how information is transformed by successive mental operations (VanLehn 1996, Ericsson 2006, Chi et al. 2014, Anderson 1993). The point we wish to make here regards the origin of the Ps. In a behavior mechanism that is genetically determined, the Ps and their succession are essentially fixed. For example, the chaining model (chapter 3) can be described with just two mental procedures that operate on short sequences of the form S → B → S′.
