HAIR
“Your hair is the ball-gown you never take off”
Jo Roberton - GHD
I don’t know about you but it’s rare for me to utterly love my hair until about 2 weeks after a hair appointment. Sure, I walk out looking like a groomed goddess but there’s just something about my hair which means it doesn’t behave for me until it’s had time to “bed in”.
This is why I think a huge part of great wedding hair is in the prep. Choosing a hairdresser early and discussing what you want your hair to be like for your wedding day. That way you can formulate a plan together and not only work on the colour and cuts but also put a treatment plan in place so that your hair is the best it can be.
Now, I’m certainly no hairdresser. I can’t even do a ponytail and that’s when I even brush my hair, so quite why I feel qualified to even give advice on this subject is beyond me. However, I have a) spent thousands and thousands on my own hair and b) helped numerous brides on their journey to find the perfect hairdresser. Therefore I am giving myself my own hair diploma.
FINDING A HAIRDRESSER
This always fills me with terror. I found my latest hairdressers on Instagram. I stalked my colourist. It was off the back of a really bad hairdresser disaster and frankly my hair was fucked! That cotton wool wispy kind of fucked. I knew I needed a crack team to get it fixed. I went along for a consultation and immediately knew he was the one. Very honest, very upfront and just no B.S. He then recommended my cutter, who is just dreamy and I adore her.
What you need to look for is a hairdresser whose portfolio content is what you like. Whose techniques you like and someone you feel comfortable with. There’s something which happens to mature, strong willed women in a hairdresser’s chair which makes us clam up and not speak. So, you have to have someone you can speak to, openly. Someone confident but not pushy.
My hair is an investment and I don’t scrimp so looking at celeb hair you like is a good start, especially if you are blonde. It’s such a tough colour to get right, so if there’s a blonde you love then look up who makes them the golden goddess. Yes they will be pricey, but in my experience you get what you pay for and chances are a good colourist will make it so you don’t have to go for monthly top ups. If you are considering a colour change for the wedding then make it gradual. Speak to them and build it up over appointments, it’s not something to do the month before the wedding. Your brain is fizzing and it’ll just give you something else to stress over.
In my experience, it’s very rare to find a single hairdresser who is a specialist at everything. So you need a team who work together.
