Syrian Christians were especially intent to “preserve” Mary’s virginity before, during, and after Jesus’ birth. God’s hand plays entirely in the story, from Mary convincing Joseph that she did not have an affair (Mary was compared to Eve for capitulating to sexual temptation in Joseph’s absence), but was impregnated by the Holy Spirit. An angel relieves Joseph of his doubt, but now they must both prove to Jerusalem’s Temple priests and elders that they have not had intimate contact. Put under trial, the unmarried couple proves their innocence, again through divine intervention. Now, The Protoevangelium of James must address the fact that Jesus has siblings. How can that be, if Mary is a virgin? He does this by showing that Joseph, an older man, had sons. Any reference to siblings, therefore, would be to Joseph’s children from a previous marriage. This “Mary lore” was popular among many Christians across the centuries, and it explains artists’ renderings of Joseph as an older man.
