The dark stone path glinted in the setting sun as she hurried down it. Magda had insisted she travel to her favorite baker to get cheese. She shook her head in annoyance. In reality, Magda had just wanted to get her out of the house for a while. Probably hoping for some stolen time with the butcher. It was obvious.

She pulled her cloak tighter about her and hurried down the road. Her destination was out on the edge of town, so it had seemed like a nice walk with the sun shining when she left. Summer had passed surprisingly quickly this year. Normally, she reveled in the long summer nights and humid air that blew across the land. She was quick to partake in the spontaneous dances that originated in the capital’s Circle, but those had also been few this year. Things with Magda were more or less the same, the dreary lord she worked for had gotten a little sick in this year’s cold, but that just meant less work for her to do around the house, even compared to her normal limited chores. Avery was attentive and charming, as usual. She worried about what would happen when he returned back to his estates to tend things at home, but he often assured her that with the princess returning, he had too many duties at the castle to warrant leaving. She still did not quite understand what he did during the day, but he kept her occupied with tales of
