Psalm 78 (77)

Attendite

Forget not the deeds of God

1 A Maskil of Asaph.

* Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;

incline your ear to the words of my mouth.

* 2 I will open my mouth in a parable;

I will utter dark sayings from of old.

* 3 The things that we have heard and known,

and that our fathers have told us,

* 4 we will not hide from their children,

telling to the generation to come

* the praises of the Lord and His strength,

and His wonders that He did.

* 5 For He established a testimony in Jacob,

and put a law in Israel,

* which He commanded to our fathers,

to make them known to their children,

* 6 that the generation to come might know,

the children yet to be born.

* They should rise up and tell them to their children,

7 so that they should put their confidence in God,

* and not forget the deeds of God,

but keep His commandments;

* 8 that they might not be like their fathers,

a stubborn and rebellious generation,

* a generation that did not make its heart steadfast,

and whose spirit was not faithful to God.

* 9 The sons of Ephraim, well-armed archers,

turned back in the day of battle.

* 10 They kept not the covenant of God,

and refused to walk in His law.

* 11 And they forgot His deeds,

and His wonders that He had shewn them.

* 12 In the sight of their fathers He did marvels,

in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Zoan.

* 13 He split the sea and brought them through,

and made the waters stand like a wall.

* 14 And He led them with a cloud by day,

and all the night by the light of fire.

* 15 He split rocks in the wilderness,

and gave them drink as from the great deep.

* 16 And He brought forth streams from the rock,

and made waters run down like rivers.

* 17 But they sinned still more against Him,

rebelling against the Most High in the parched land.

* 18 And they tempted God in their hearts

by asking food for their souls.

* 19 And they spoke against God;

they said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?

* 20 Behold, He struck the rock, and the waters gushed out,

and the streams overflowed.

* Can He also give bread,

or provide meat for His people?”

* 21 Therefore the Lord heard and was enraged, †

and a fire was kindled against Jacob,

and anger rose against Israel,

* 22 because they believed not in God,

and trusted not in His salvation.

* 23 But He commanded the clouds from above,

and opened the doors of heaven.

* 24 And He rained upon them manna to eat,

and gave them grain from heaven:

* 25 Man ate the bread of angels;

He sent them provisions in abundance.

* 26 He stirred up the east wind in heaven,

and by His strength He led forth the south wind.

* 27 And He rained upon them flesh as dust,

and wingèd fowl as the sand of the sea,

* 28 and they fell in the midst of their camp,

round about their habitations.

* 29 And they ate and were well sated,

for He had brought them what they craved.

* 30 They had not turned aside from their craving,

their food was still in their mouths,

* 31 when the anger of God rose against them, †

and He slew the fattest among them,

and laid low the chosen of Israel.

* 32 Despite all this they still sinned

and believed not in His wondrous works,

* 33 so He ended their days in vanity,

and their years with dispatch.
