Hugo looked up at her and whimpered.

“No one’s cross with you!” exclaimed Zoe.

“What’s going on?” Meep asked, hopping on to Zoe’s shoulder.

“He thinks my classmates are angry with him for knocking over the goat feed. He thinks they won’t want to adopt him.” Zoe wished Hugo didn’t become so prickly when he was upset. She really wanted to give him a hug! “They know it was an accident, Hugo.”

Hugo gave another sad little grunt.

“You knocked it over on purpose?” said Zoe. “But why?”

“Maybe he was hungry,” said Meep.

The little hedgehog shook his head and snuffled. Zoe couldn’t help smiling as Hugo explained that he wanted to help feed the goats.

“Well, in that case, you definitely aren’t in trouble,” said Zoe. “You were just trying to be helpful.” She picked the pieces of goat feed from Hugo’s spikes. “Let’s go and have some lunch. Then I’ll show you some more of the zoo.”

As Zoe set off for the café with Hugo and Meep, she couldn’t help wondering what else might happen today. Life certainly wasn’t boring with Hugo around!
