Pause for Reflection

How would it be for us to view our most distressing “symptoms” as a wise gift of protection? Let’s listen for one part of ourselves that we have a tendency to reject. It might be anything—a critical voice, a part with addictive tendencies, an aspect of ourselves that has a fearful or angry response under certain conditions, a hard-heartedness at times. Simply getting into receptive relationship with this part, particularly in the presence of another if someone is available to us, will begin a conversation that may open us to awareness of the underlying implicit memory that requires this protective part. From there, the possibility of mismatch/disconfirmation/repair comes closer. For now, we are simply offering to become aware of the presence of these protective symptoms.
