It would have been understandable if Roman Lubetzky became a bitter and vengeful person after losing much of his family and a good part of his childhood, and then experiencing anti-Semitism in the country to which he escaped. But instead he chose to affirm life, humor, and love and he passed these qualities on to his son.

In the depths of hell-on-earth, a small, unexpected act of kindness helped to save a boy’s life. It’s a long way from a rotting potato to a dark chocolate cherry cashew snack bar. But as the fabled Greek poet Aesop (620–564 BC) wrote,

The level of our success is limited only by our imagination and no act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.

KIND is one of the fastest-growing brands in the snacks market. Mars bought a minority stake in the company in 2017, valuing it at over $4 billion.1 More than a billion KIND bars were enjoyed in the last year and innumerable acts of kindness have been inspired by Daniel’s initiatives. And these initiatives are part of a movement to reimagine the notion of business success so that it always includes kindness, healing, and love.
