I was losing my edge and losing my mind. How had this woman, who I barely knew and had spent sixty percent of the time I had known her hating her, started to occupy so much of my mental headspace?

Even now, instead of working on the best way to make my case to Martin that he should work with my firm, I was being driven to Belle’s apartment. I didn’t even know if she was going to be there.

I stared out the window at the stone and brick buildings of the historic neighborhood.

Just tell the driver to turn around. This is nuts. You’ve lost it.

Except there walking along the sidewalk, big bag slung over her bare shoulder, was Belle.

“Stop the car,” I said to the driver, opening the door before the SUV had come to a complete stop.

Belle froze then went into a fighter’s stance and pulled a foot-long metal flashlight out of her bag, brandishing it.

“Holy shit!” I exclaimed, holding up my arms.

She relaxed when she saw it was me.

I approached her warily.

“Are you just looking for a fight?” I asked incredulously.

“Do you always creep around in an SUV and jump out acting like you’re about to kidnap someone?” Belle retorted.

I grabbed her purse strap, pulling her toward me.

“You can’t just send someone a picture like that and not expect drastic action to be taken,” I said in a low voice.

“You act like that’s a rare occurrence,” she said, blue eyes bright in the sunlight. “I’m sure you have tons of women sending you topless photos.”

“I assure you, I do not. I’m a respectable business owner. I can’t have lewd photos all over my phone,” I said, leaning in. “It’s a terrible distraction.”

I brushed my lips against hers then kissed her harder. Her mouth was delicious, but I wanted more. “Come with me.”

“I need to go to a meeting,” she said. Her skin was flushed, though, and she was breathing hard. “And my train is almost here.”

“I’ll give you a ride.”
