Every Scientist Has Faith

Faith and science are inseparable. Without faith that the laws of nature apply everywhere in the universe, that the laws of logic are valid, and that our five senses are basically reliable, science would be impossible. Furthermore, what we believe about God (His existence or nonexistence), His relationship to the creation (active or inactive), and the truth of His revelation (the Bible) will affect what questions we are permitted to ask in scientific research (and what answers we are permitted to put forth). The same is true for what we observe, how we interpret what we observe, and how we apply the knowledge gained by that research (for good or for evil). The atheist—as well as the Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu or Buddhist—has faith commitments that affect his or her scientific endeavor.

It would be a mistake to assume that scientists are totally objective, unbiased, and free from faith commitments. There is no such human. Every scientist has faith, even the most ardent atheist. The only question is this: Are all our beliefs true, especially our beliefs about God and His Word? If our beliefs are contrary to His Word, we can be sure that sooner or later our scientific understanding of the world will be wrong in some ways.
