Emphasizing the present moment

Therapists should respond to what is happening in the room at the time that it is happening, in the here and now, rather than in between or after sessions. Responding in this way means allowing powerful emotions to arise and to work with them as they are presently felt, rather than relegating them to a later moment. The practical work of the Western Lapland teams has shown that the more intense the emotions in the meeting, the better the outcome for the network (Seikkula, in press). Tying questions or comments to “present moments” in the conversation extends the dialogic space of both utterance and response and allows for emotions to emerge, sometimes with great and productive intensity. And sometimes, too, the trace of a conversation and the potential for continuing it—is captured, not in words, but in embodied memory the somatic not‐yet‐told record of what transpired (Olson et al., 2014; Seikkula, 2008).
