In 15 cardiac surgery patients, episodes of hypotension and hypertension, defined as SAP <90 mmHg and SAP >140 mmHg respectively, were identified manually in the arterial line signal. The authors proposed a classification system based on the position of the dicrotic notch and the amplitude of the PPG pulse, to differentiate between vasoconstriction and vasodilation. A classification accuracy for hypotension and hypertension episodes of 98% was reported
