Chapter Eighteen

Day Four

Where the hell is he? Clara wondered for the millionth time that day.

She’d woken feeling refreshed and alert. At first, it hadn’t mattered she was alone. She’d taken her time in the bathroom, sampling the many toiletries and vanity products. She’d smiled thinking of Cadmael in a mud mask then realized he may have gotten everything for her. She knew he’d planned for her to be there a while—at least until he’d gotten his things back. But why treat her to such lavishness?

In the closet, she’d tried on several outfits before settling on super-soft lounge pants and an off-the-shoulder, open-back T-shirt, both in earthy shades of taupe. The design was simple but the material was so luxurious she couldn’t stop touching it.

Breakfast had been brought in by someone she’d never seen before and he’d only bowed and left when she’d asked about Geoffrey. Clara had immediately gone up to a camera and asked Cadmael directly, “Where is Blue? What happened to Geoffrey?”

That had been hours ago and there was still no response.

She’d been a fool to think her prisoner status had been changed. Her husband and the necklace were still missing, after all. And she hadn’t proven her trustworthiness. She didn’t blame him—she hadn’t done anything helpful so far.

And until someone brought the computer back, she couldn’t even try. She’d already asked the camera if Tyler had had any luck with the tracing. Maybe they’d found Jackson and that was why no one was responding.

Finally, sometime after lunch was delivered—a lunch she was too stressed to touch—Tyler entered with the laptop. “Good afternoon, DeathDealer37.” He smiled as he set it on the desk and pulled up a chair. He turned to look at her when she didn’t sit down immediately.

She held out her hands impatiently. “Well? Anything on Jackson?”

“No, sorry,” he said sheepishly.

She harrumphed and sat down, one knee bent up with her foot planted on the seat, and started navigating to the girls’ shared drive.

“It’s okay. I’m just...anxious. I have no idea what’s going on and I thought maybe that was why I haven’t seen anyone.”

“And by anyone you mean boss man,” he stated the obvious.

Her fingers continued running over the keyboard as she flashed him a petulant grimace.

Turning back to the computer screen, she looked over the most recent entry and exclaimed, “Blue! She’s okay. Oh, thank God!”

“She’s your friend in the auction?” Tyler asked.

“Yes, but she says there was a raid and—holy shit!—she was shot!” The words tumbled from her lips as she read Blue’s sparse and succinct message. “But a federal agent got her to safety...and she’s okay.”

She felt layers of tension leave her body in waves. Now that Blue was safe, she could acknowledge the fear, anxiety, and guilt she’d been holding onto. Blue went through all of this—fucking hell, she’d even been shot—all because of her. No, not her. Jackson.

She could not wait to divorce the wretched man.

Returning her attention to the drive she read Leela’s most recent share.

“Now, here’s something.”

Tyler leaned in and they both read in silence.
