What do I think? Is he serious? What do I think?
Tajâs lips moved, but my ears stopped processing sound at the words why donât you come with me.
This man that I had only known enough to say hello and joke around withâ¦and have sex with wanted me to get into a car and leave city limits with him. We hadnât so much as been on a date but he wanted me to travel with him. To another state?
Heâd started talking again, but I interrupted his spiel with a hand to his chest. I closed my eyes and sucked in a breath, then opened them again, prepared to barrel forward in telling him he was nuts if he thought I would agree to travel alone with him.
The excitement in his eyes, the hope in his face at the prospect of a road trip, stopped me cold.
âTaj, Iââ
âI know. Youâre concerned about your safety. I could be dangerous. I could be a serial killer.â
âThatâs so comforting, considering you live next door.â
âAnd you listen to an almost constant barrage of murder stories. Youâd be crazy to consider it.â
âAnd yet youâre asking me to.â
âIâll cover everything: transportation, food, housing, fun⦠everything. You donât have to spend a thin dime. If you want to send my information to Ebony so she can make sure youâre okay, thatâs cool with me. Whatever would make you feel safe.â
On the one hand: It would be nice to get out of town for a few days. Relax, do some sightseeing. Let someone take care of me for once.
On the other hand: This wasnât a good idea.
On the other other hand: Neither was fucking my landlord, and that worked out okay.
If the town was going to be without power for days, my only other option was to drive to Healy and spend a few days at my parentâs house. That would not be a good idea.
Taj leaned in and kissed me as if proximity and soft lips would break down the last barrier. âIf it sweetens the pot,â he said quietly, âI talked my mom into making her sausage lasagna and garlic bread. Itâs the best Iâve ever tasted, and you donât want to miss it.â
My mouth watered at the mention of hearty pasta, red sauce, and fresh crusty, buttery garlic bread. That would hit the spot after days of takeout and four hours in the car. âI am a greedy bitch that loves food.â
âThe weather will damn sure be nicer than it is here. And, you know, full power. No downed trees, no electrical lines on the ground. Do any of your podcasts talk about people being electrocuted?â
âOkay, all right.â I tossed up my hands in defeat. Then I admitted to myself that Iâd decided I wanted to go as soon as he suggested it, but I had to talk myself into it. âBut if weâre leaving today, I need to go back to my place and pack, pack.â
Taj rolled his eyes at my declaration. âHow long does it
