What do I think? Is he serious? What do I think?

Taj’s lips moved, but my ears stopped processing sound at the words why don’t you come with me.

This man that I had only known enough to say hello and joke around with…and have sex with wanted me to get into a car and leave city limits with him. We hadn’t so much as been on a date but he wanted me to travel with him. To another state?

He’d started talking again, but I interrupted his spiel with a hand to his chest. I closed my eyes and sucked in a breath, then opened them again, prepared to barrel forward in telling him he was nuts if he thought I would agree to travel alone with him.

The excitement in his eyes, the hope in his face at the prospect of a road trip, stopped me cold.

“Taj, I—”

“I know. You’re concerned about your safety. I could be dangerous. I could be a serial killer.”

“That’s so comforting, considering you live next door.”

“And you listen to an almost constant barrage of murder stories. You’d be crazy to consider it.”

“And yet you’re asking me to.”

Taj leaned in and kissed me as if proximity and soft lips would break down the last barrier. “If it sweetens the pot,” he said quietly, “I talked my mom into making her sausage lasagna and garlic bread. It’s the best I’ve ever tasted, and you don’t want to miss it.”

My mouth watered at the mention of hearty pasta, red sauce, and fresh crusty, buttery garlic bread. That would hit the spot after days of takeout and four hours in the car. “I am a greedy bitch that loves food.”

“The weather will damn sure be nicer than it is here. And, you know, full power. No downed trees, no electrical lines on the ground. Do any of your podcasts talk about people being electrocuted?”

“Okay, all right.” I tossed up my hands in defeat. Then I admitted to myself that I’d decided I wanted to go as soon as he suggested it, but I had to talk myself into it. “But if we’re leaving today, I need to go back to my place and pack, pack.”

Taj rolled his eyes at my declaration. “How long does it
