polyphenols is one of those buzzwords that is thrown around, but what does it actually mean?
Polyphenols are natural chemicals found in some plant-based foods with antioxidant and disease-fighting/preventing properties. If something has antioxidant properties, it has the power to combat the negative effects of free radicals, which can cause stress-related cell damage to the body, including ageing. Imagine the polyphenols as mini superheroes in your body, fighting and sweeping up the free radicals that your body naturally produces, and you are exposed to as part of day-to-day life. You can find polyphenols in all plants, but some contain more than others. Try to eat a rainbow to get a range of different powerful polyphenols in your diet. Foods high in polyphenols include berries, brightly coloured and dark leafy vegetables, green and black tea, filtered coffee (yes!), red wine (yes!) and dark chocolate (at least 75% cocoa solids â yes!).
