Neck angle and pitch

Bolt-on Fender-style guitars have virtually no angle between the body and the neck, with the plane of the body being parallel to that of the neck (see photo, right). Since the 1970s, Fender have included a micro-tilt adjustment in the neck socket to enable the introduction of a little ‘neck-angle’; this angle enables setting a lower action without altering the adjustment of the bridge or neck ‘relief’ (conversely removing the neck pitch will raise the action without making any other adjustments). Prior to the introduction of the ‘micro-tilt’ many Fenders had a red-brown card shim inserted to raise the neck at the socket.
