Perspective-taking is a valuable skill that even the youngest learners can learn. Rooted in empathy, perspective-taking is the ability to see the world through the eyes of another person.

I want to tell you a story: I was driving along a winding road one day, when a car passed my vehicle on a dangerous curve with limited visibility. Any number of terrible things might have happened, but luckily no one was hurt. My fear quickly turned to anger. This person could have caused a major accident! At a stoplight just up the road, I caught up to the erratic car, where it was now driving onto the shoulder trying to bypass the cars at the stoplight. “This person is crazy or drunk or both!” I thought. I decided to follow the car, get the license number, and report the negligent driver to the police. Someone needed to stop this dangerous driver! I didn’t have to follow for long. Because less than a mile up the road, the car took another quick turn—this time into the driveway of the local ER. All my frustration and anger melted away, and I hoped that whatever urgent medical emergency this person was dealing with would have a happy ending. If it were me, I thought to myself, I would have made all the same choices. I frequently think of this story, especially in moments when I’m ready to judge another person without the whole story.
