Deciduous shrub

Warm greenhouse

Start from bareroot or container plants; propagate from cuttings

Full sun

Make sure to buy a fruiting pomegranate like ‘Wonderful’, as some varieties are ornamental only. Grow young pomegranate in 3–5 gal. (10–20 liter) containers and give plenty of water. Pomegranate will thrive in most soils that are not too acidic or alkaline; near neutral is best. When the plant is dormant, transplant into larger pots. At about two years old, fertilize with 10-2-2 before the spring bloom. Many pomegranate trees send up suckers from around the roots, so if you want a tree, you should prune these out.

The fruit hangs on the tree for several months and should only be picked when it is fully ripe. It will last about a month if kept in the refrigerator. Generally trouble-free.
