You can source used items from many places. Consider local charity shops that carry large furniture, social-media selling platforms, dedicated online selling sites (such as Gumtree), garage and car-boot sales, flea markets, second-hand fairs, or even at auction. For a less hand-me-down feel, there are also gems to be found in antique shops, vintage and second-hand shops – upcycling companies can also be a fun way to get something unique but partially used. You could also look at upcycling what you already have or an item that you can find second-hand. There are plenty of inspiration and tutorials to be found online.

If you have no other option but to buy new, look at where the item is made, the materials used and how they were sourced. Choose materials such as metal and wood, and consider the fixtures and other component parts, trying to avoid plastic where possible. Wooden furniture tends to be the easiest to repair if things break, and metal tends to be sturdier than plastic and so lasts longer. Look for natural-fibre fabrics that were organically grown and sustainably sourced.

Think about wear and tear, too. This will affect the lifespan of an item, which in turn impacts the waste you could potentially create. Ideally, you want things to last a lifetime. Ask yourself:

Can it be washed, or will it be easy to clean?

Is it in a colour that’s going to be long lasting across time and seasons?

Is it a timeless style rather than just the in-thing right now?

Is it adaptable – will it work in different rooms, in different seasons and with numerous décor styles?

Is it sturdy and well made – will it stand up to wear and tear over time?
