Born In The U.S.A. / Bruce Springsteen

RELEASED 1984 | COLUMBIA RECORDS | USA | SLEEVE DESIGN BY ANDREA KLEIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNIE LEIBOVITZ | ALBUM PRODUCED BY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, JON LANDAU, CHUCK PLOTKIN AND STEVE VAN ZANDT

The sleeve literally takes its concept from the title: a piece of all-American chauvinism featuring worn Levi’s jeans, complete with the all-important red tag, a faded baseball cap and the red-and-white bars from Old Glory. The choice of working-class symbols (jeans, baseball cap and the slightly flashy cowboy belt) rather than the symbols of corporate America (Coca-Cola, huge Detroit cars, skyscrapers) reveal Springsteen’s leftward leaning, pro-working man stance and stops the image from being just another piece of American jingoism. The songs show the same mixture of American pride and blue-collar sympathy and the album did much to cement Springsteen’s role as the conscience of the music industry. [BM]
