Coming Home

Sin leads us away from God. Like Cain, we wander off into our own wildernesses, cut off from God and feeling increasingly separated from the goodness, joy, peace, and fulfilment that were meant to be part of being human in God’s world. Alienation and exclusion are among the most painful things that anybody has to bear, and at a fundamental level sin imposes them on all human beings. We are cut off and excluded from God, apart from his grace. But through the cross, God brings us home. Using the Old Testament story, Paul tells Gentile believers that in contrast to being far away from God and his saving work, they have now been brought right into it.

Therefore, remember that formerly . . . you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. . . . Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household.

— Ephesians 2:11 – 13, 19
