DIGGING DEEPER

The graves of Jewish martyrs and holy men were carefully noted, cared for and honored. In fact, fifty such tombs in Jesus' day were sites of yearly veneration services in which people would gather to celebrate the life and teaching of the holy figure. Thus Jesus' tomb would have been carefully noted. Yet the early church never held veneration services at his grave-a fact that would have disgraced the name of Jesus, unless the earliest Christians did not think Jesus was there! Moreover, the church did venerate Jesus on a regular basis, but it was in acts of baptism and the Lord's Supper. What is odd is that it is not his person or teachings that are celebrated but his death-clearly a puzzling thing, unless the church believed his tomb was empty and he was raised!
