There was an unceremonious splash as Amir fell through the waterfall into the stream beyond. Selvi smacked her head with her hand in exasperation and slipped back the way sheâd come. She fled into the trees and up the path, climbing steadily away, remembering Amirâs words about letting the men find only him if they got caught.
When she was high enough to feel sure they couldnât catch her, she watched what was happening below. She couldnât hear what they were all saying but it seemed quite cheerful and Liyanage even looked as if he was laughing. Only Jansz was silent, studying Amir, who was chatting and waving his arms about.
She decided to wait for him, absolutely bursting to tell him what sheâd heard. After a few minutes he turned up, soaking wet.
âWhat did you tell them you were doing?â she asked, unable to help herself laughing at him.
He grinned. âI said Iâd forgotten a shoe last time I came swimming and I was looking for it when I fell in.â
âDid they buy it?â
âI think so,â he said as they walked on, his shirt stuck to his back. âLiyanage did, at least.â
âI noticed Jansz didnât say much.â
Amir bit his lip. âI think he recognised me from when he saw me at my house. But that doesnât mean anything, does it?â
âNo,â said Selvi. âIt doesnât.â All the same, she was a bit uneasy. She didnât want Jansz connecting the two of them. The last thing she wanted was for Amir to be in trouble too.
âAnyway, I have big news,â she said. âDid you hear that noise when we were behind the waterfall?â
Amir shivered in his wet clothes. âNo? And why do you look so happy?â
Theyâd come to the track that led to his house. Selvi laughed, her heart soaring.
âBecause I know where Lokka is!â
