Chapter Thirteen

Daniel had regretted it the second the words had left his mouth with that offer to help Faith go cut down mistletoe for her creations. He had meant it as a friendly gesture. Actually, he’d been terrified that she would have an accident and be stuck out in the woods with no one to help her. The problem was that spending time alone with Faith was . . . temptation.

Simply being near her made him happy.

Friends shouldn’t feel that way about friends. He should leave her to figure out her life and get on with his own plans. Instead, here he was pulling the small buggy up outside her house after having finished all his chores at home on his day to not be in the shop. Maybe Faith would invite Mercy or Malachi along on this holly and mistletoe trip. Or bring the baby.

That would make it more casual.

She was the one to answer the door when he knocked, already dressed in sensible shoes and a warm wool jacket, a scarf wrapped around her head and neck. No Rosie. No Mercy. No Malachi. As far as he could tell, no one else in the house at all.

“Should I bring a ladder?” she asked with a friendly smile, not a hint in her eyes of the same turmoil he was feeling.

Because she only sees you as a friend.

“No. I have one in the buggy.” Then, because he couldn’t help himself, he added, “You did eat lunch first, didn’t you?”

A question that made her eyes sparkle with laughter. “Of course. Did you?”

“Jah.”

“Not too much, I hope.” Then she held up a jug that he hadn’t even noticed was in her hand. “I made some warm apple cider to share.”

“Oh. Gute.” Now she was making him treats?

Should he ask if she’d brought thick gloves? If they found any blooming holly bushes, he planned to cut those as well, but holly had some wicked spikes. Only asking now would make him sound like an overanxious mama. He’d brought an extra pair of his mater’s just in case, so he decided not to say anything.

Ushering Faith into the buggy, he got them started down the road. “I thought we might go to the field where I’m moving my beehives first. We could also move the boxes while we’re there. With your help, it will go quickly. Then to Hope and Aaron’s house. It backs up to a thicket of woods with plenty of trees.”

“Sounds gute.”

Then they fell into silence.

Daisy tossed her head after Daniel fiddled with the reins for the umpteenth time, so he quieted his hands. No need to be nervous. This was just Faith. In fact, she seemed perfectly happy to be sitting beside him without saying a word, looking out over the world. Today was rather bleak to be out. A blanket of high gray clouds meant a low chance of rain, but also lent a sort of gloom to the day and definitely kept the sun’s warmth away.

First, Daniel took them back to his parents’ house, where they had the easiest access to his bees.
