The reaction of a mother who has just discovered her two-year-old child under the kitchen sink emptying the contents of all the boxes and bottles is understandable. This is dangerous behavior. Who knows what the child might have eaten? Even after a cooler head has prevailed, it is a behavior that must be changed.

We can’t expect a child of this age to respond to rational arguments. Disciplining the child isn’t the answer either, because the child is responding to an urge stronger than normal and one that usual disciplinary procedures will not correct. Besides, if we really understood what the child was doing, we wouldn’t want to change it. So childproofing the kitchen and bathroom cabinets and putting plastic covers over doorknobs would be a better solution than spankings.

The dyslexic child isn’t getting into things just to upset the parents. The child is responding to an urge that will eventually become part of the gift of dyslexia.

The seed that has begun to grow is curiosity. Curiosity is a stronger force than gravity. If it weren’t, there wouldn’t be airplanes. Curiosity is more important than knowledge; it is the root of knowledge. Without it there wouldn’t be any such thing as knowledge.

Most importantly, curiosity is the dynamic force behind creativity. Without creativity, mankind would still be living in caves.
