KALEIDOSCOPE GROUP

The Kaleidoscope Group (Map 6.7, Table 6.6, numbers 75 through 85) is a relatively compact set of hot springs. Its most obvious feature is the large pool of Deep Blue Geyser, far across the sinter flats northwest of the Fountain Group. The group contains at least twelve active geysers plus numerous perpetual spouters. The area is known for exceptionally large geysers, some of which play from explosion craters that have formed during recorded history. That is part of the reason no trail leads into the area. The closest public approach and best view is from the “Fountain Overlook” within the Fountain Group, hundreds of yards away, and identification of the geysers from there is difficult even for experienced observers. To give a sense of scale, as viewed from the Fountain Overlook, if an eruption reaches as high as the top of the distant ridgeline, it is about 90 feet tall.
