In Brief—Bernard of Clairvaux

Born—In 1090 near Dijon, France.

Family—The third of seven children born to Blessed Tescelin, Lord of Fontaies, and Blessed Aleth of Montbard. Five of Bernard’s siblings were also declared “blessed” by the Church.

Entered—the austere Cistercian order in 1112, along with thirty other young nobleman, including his uncle and brothers whom he had persuaded to enter with him.

Refused—multiple bishoprics, preferring instead the life of abbot and preacher.

Preached—the Second Crusade throughout France and Germany at the request of Pope Eugene III. Thousands of men responded with enthusiasm to his call to take back the Holy Land from Muslims. When the crusade failed, in part perhaps because of the sins of the Crusaders, many blamed Bernard, who emerged from the controversy faithful to his mission in the Church.

Healed—the Great Schism that followed the death of Pope Honorius II in 1130. With two men both claiming the papacy, the Church’s bishops asked Bernard to decide who was the legitimate pope. Bernard chose Pope Innocent II, and his decision was accepted by the ruling powers of Europe.

Wrote—hundreds of homilies, letters, and theological treatises, including his most famous on the “Song of Songs.”

Died—on August 20, 1153.

Feast Day—August 20.
