Overshadowed by the onset of jet-powered aircraft, this remarkable and elegant aircraft was withdrawn from service in mid-1956.

Two unusual post-war applications for Rolls-Royce were in the Spanish-built Heinkel 1-11 and the Me109. These aircraft were employed in the production of the Battle of Britain film.

An unsupercharged version of the Merlin, known as the Meteor, powered the Cromwell tank; also during the war, a marine version was developed for motor torpedo boats. There was even a proposed application for use in a large torpedo! There was general agreement, amongst experts from both sides of the warring factions, that the Rolls-Royce Merlin was the best engine in use during the Second World War. Post-war, the Merlin was fitted to civil aircraft, the Avro York and Lancastrian (both based on the Lancaster bomber), the Avro Tudor and the Douglas DC-4M. Apart from these applications the Merlin was used in the post-war years in high-speed racing boats and still flies today, in highly tuned form, in racing Mustang aircraft, not forgetting the vintage Spitfires, Hurricanes and the lone Lancaster that thrill spectators to this day.

This is a fitting tribute to the memory of Sir Frederick Henry Royce, a man who rose from humble beginnings to become recognized as a genius in piston engine design, and to his team, led so ably by Ernest Hives, from inception to its ultimate development.
