Chapter Nine

“Concentrate,” Ronan instructed for what felt like the hundredth time.

Learning about magic sounded so interesting, but somehow, the actual application bored the hunter. The runes made sense. Carving them was fine, but did he really have to sit through lectures. Even Ronan’s eldest Leo, who sat beside Theron in the makeshift classes, seemed ready to nod off at any moment.

“Just tell me the damn words! That worked last time,” Theron grumbled, but Ronan shook his head.

“If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could blow yourself up!” Pointing to the chalkboard, Ronan tapped it with his finger. “Shields are important.”

Rolling his eyes, Theron groaned. “Skip to the cords. If I can cut them myself, I don’t need to wait around for Fannar!”

“I thought you hadn’t decided to cut them,” Leo asked, spinning in his chair. “I wouldn’t cut my cord. My mate is a fae prince. His name is Idwal. Isn’t that a beautiful name?” Leo giggled airly, and the air about him sparkled as his magic acted without a single thought. Warlocks were unfairly gifted. “His brother’s name is Cadfael, but I think Idwal sounds nicer.” Pouting, Leo huffed, “Cadfael’s just mean.”

Ronan crossed his arms over his chest. “And you’ll find yourself being ignored by Idwal if you say that about his brother. Those two are best friends.”

“I should be his best friend!” the young warlock cried.

“You shouldn’t be anything,” Theron grumbled. “How often do you even see him?”

“A lot!” Leo cried. “At least once a year!”

The hunter rolled his eyes. “Idwal sees his brother every day. He doesn’t owe you shit.”

“Language!” Ronan hissed.

Not that Leo even paid attention to the hunter’s swearing. He gasped, taking offense to the logic itself. “I’m his mate!”

“And I’m looking to cut my mate cord. If you keep being a little asshole, he might do the same to you,” Theron threatened, and the young warlock blanched as the possibility settled over him.

Glaring at Theron, Ronan stepped forward, turning his son to face him. “Don’t listen to Theron. You shouldn’t say such things about Cadfael, but that doesn’t mean - ”

“He ignored me the last time he was here because I called Cadfael boring!” the boy wailed as tears streamed down his face.

As if sensing their brother’s distress, Ronan’s other children burst into the room. Or, more accurately, Dustin threw open the door and Malcolm toddled after him.

“What did you do?” Dustin demanded.

Three-year-old Malcolm copied his six-year-old brother as he repeated, “What did you do?”

If nothing else proved he was utterly unsuited to be a forest bride, his interactions with Ronan’s children underlined fate had made a horrible mistake. The image of his belly rounding - of carrying his love’s children - appealed to the hunter in a primal way, but the talent he had with his cousins utterly failed when faced with the almost hive-like minds of Ronan’s sons. They not only empathized with each other, but Dustin felt his siblings’ emotions magically, rushing off like a miniature guard to muscle through whatever bothered his brothers.
