Mint Julep

Makes 1 mint julep (recipe can be multiplied)

The key to making this quintessential drink of the American South is good-quality bourbon and shaved ice. The shaved ice, stirred, frosts the glass and slightly dilutes the bourbon (but not too much) in a way that ice cubes won’t. You can throw some ice cubes into a blender to make the shaved ice if need be.

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon water

2 teaspoons sugar

8 mint leaves, plus a few sprigs for garnish

2 ounces bourbon

INSTRUCTIONS

1. In a julep cup or a highball glass, stir together the water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Add the mint leaves and break them up with a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon.

2. Fill the glass with shaved ice. Add the bourbon. Stir vigorously to combine the ingredients. When the glass is frosty, garnish with a sprig of mint, drop in a straw, and serve at once.
